Fix for database error with Robots Meta plugin

thumb-wordpress

I use a plugin called Robots Meta. This plugin makes it really easy to control the way robots / spiders crawl and index your blog. You can for instance prevent indexing of your login, register and admin pages by adding noindex robots meta tags or disable your author and date-based archives if you don’t use them. These are just two of many other features. When setup correctly it will optimize your blog for better search engine indexing.

Did I mention already that I’m a gadget addict? Since a couple of months I own a HTC Magic smartphone running on Android 1.6. It’s my first smartphone but I’m very satisfied with both the phone and the operating system. It has actually become more than just a gadget and made my life a little easier here and there. One of the greatest things is that you can download all kinds of useful applications through the Android Market.

Below is a short list of my favourite applications. Go check them out if you own an Android powered phone and haven’t tried these applications yet. You can use the ShopSavvy or the Barcode Scanner to scan the QR-code and install the applications right away.

Correct count for comments, trackbacks and pingbacks

thumb-wordpress

The last couple of days I posted tutorials on how to separate trackbacks from comments and how to display them in different tabs using jQuery. In the last tutorial about the jQuery tabs I also posted a solution on how to correct the comments count by excluding trackbacks and pingbacks. However, on my own theme I wanted to take it a step further and show separate counts for trackbacks and pingbacks as well. I had a tough time trying to find a proper solution for this though, but I finally found something which deserves mentioning here.

Network Drive Mapper: manage your network shares

thumb-network

I have you have a home network like myself you will probably create network shares from time to time to manage all your data. Although this can be done within Windows itself this isn’t always as easy as it should be. I, for instance, had some problems with Windows Vista and remembering passwords for Samba share on a NAS (Synology DS-207+) after a reboot. Next to that, creating permanent shares may clutter your My Computer folder if you have a lot of them. Having a lot of active shares will also cause for extra bandwidth and resource usage because Windows monitors these active shares.

jQuery tabs for WordPress comments and trackbacks

thumb-wordpress-comments

A couple of days ago I wrote a simple tutorial on how you can separate trackbacks from comments. This tutorial didnt do much with the presentation as it only displayed the trackbacks below the comments. In this article I’ll describe an easy way to create different tabs for comments and trackbacks. You see this tabbed layout being used in a lot of WordPress themes lately as it is a clean way of presenting comments and trackbacks separately.

Prevent image hotlinking in WordPress

Stop

Hotlinking is a term used when an image hosted on your webserver is linked on another website. Every time the image is viewed on that other website it is loaded from your webserver. This is a bad thing because is uses your (precious) bandwith and creates server load on your webserver without you actually benefiting from it.

There are however ways to prevent this from happing.

Tools to convert HTML to BBCode

BBCode

It happens now and then that I write an article in WordPress using basic HTML to format my text which I then want to post on a forum as well. As most of you know forums use different tags for formatting text called BBCode. Most forums have a rich text editor that will take over the right formatting when pasting in the formatted text. When a rich text editor is not available extra actions are required to take over the right formatting. To get the same layout on a forum topic you will have to reformat the text using BBCode tags. Instead of doing this by hand there are tools out there that can automate this job and save you some of your precious time. Below is a list of resources that get this job done.

My home theater setup: ASRock ION-330HT with XBMC

ASRock ION-330HT

Until recently (end of 2009) I used an old Xbox together with the multimediaplayer software XBMC to view movies and listen to music. I had been using this setup for years now and with great pleasure. But now that HD movies have become widely available and because the old Xbox can’t handle this resource intensive high quality media it was time for a change.

My research focused on the Popcorn Hour C-200 at first which was just announced at that time. The C-200 is a digital media player that will play almost any kind of media and that allows a harddrive and/or BluRay player to be added to the setup. The hardware looked perfect but I read a lot of negative reviews about the firmware and software. Also the screenshots of the software did not look very nice as I was used to XBMC by now. In the end I could not image not having XBMC to control my media as this is just the perfect software for the job. Not only does it look good, it’s open source and freely available as well. So I looked for another solution for my home theater setup. It didn’t take me long to find the ION-330 mini-pc serie from ASRock. This system, and especially the HT serie that come with a remote, is the perfect hardware in co-operation with XBMC as multimedia software to serve as HTPC.

My XBMC Installation Guide for ION-330HT

I had to do quite some reading to get the perfect setup. I decided to gather all this information and make my own installation guide. This installation guide can be useful to get you up and running in no time and it’s pretty dummy proof.XBMC Media Center But some of these steps can be quite challenging if you are inexperienced with Linux, SSH and computers in general. If this is the case, please ask someone with more experience to perform these actions for you. Although it’s not very likely that it will happen, I’m in no way responsible for damaging your system.
